A Mac drive that stores repeated data once.
HoloDrive keeps a drive at ~/HoloDrive that stores repeated data once, so git clones, worktrees, node_modules and cargo build output take a fraction of the space. Finder, Terminal and your tools all use the same path.
Every copy stored in full.
Repeated blocks stored once.
Illustration of the idea, not to scale.
About 2.2x less disk on a real workload.
A ripgrep clone, two worktrees and a cargo build in each.
Measured on that one workload. Your savings depend on how much of your data repeats.
Built for developers with a lot of copies.
Every tool works unchanged
HoloDrive is a real APFS volume. Git, Xcode, node and cargo see an ordinary folder at ~/HoloDrive.
No lock-in
The export command writes plain disk images that stock hdiutil attach opens. Your data can leave without HoloDrive.
Crash-safe
The store survives a kill -9. Every write that returned is kept.
Never held hostage
If the license lapses, the drive keeps working. Only extra features, like warm-start, turn off.
Set up in about a minute.
- Download
Get the DMG, signed with Developer ID.
- Open and set up
The menu-bar app walks you through setup. It shows status and the space saved.
- Use ~/HoloDrive
Put clones, worktrees and build output there. An optional
holodriveCLI is available.
How it stores less.
HoloDrive deduplicates in 4 KiB blocks and compresses with LZ4. Zero blocks are never stored, and freed space is reclaimed in the background.
Warm-start replays recently read blocks at login, so the first reads after login are fast.

Questions.
Is my data safe?
The store is crash-safe. It survives a kill -9, and every write that returned is kept.
What happens when the trial ends?
The drive never stops working when a license lapses. Only extra features, like warm-start, turn off. Your data is never held hostage.
Can I get my data out?
Yes. The export command writes plain disk images that stock hdiutil attach opens, with or without HoloDrive installed.
Does it work with git, Xcode and node?
Yes. HoloDrive is a real APFS volume, so every tool works unchanged. It is built for git clones, worktrees, node_modules and cargo build output.
What macOS do I need?
macOS 26 or later. HoloDrive is signed with Developer ID.
